Resonance of Fate Review
Resonance of Fate is an interesting specimen of what happens when innovation is crossbreed with a JRPG. What we get is a high quality game with about 2 brand new functions added to the JRPG library. In the game you control 3 "Hunters" in a steam punk post apocalyptic future. Due to natural disaster the surface of the Earth is inhabitable and the remaining humans are living on a large tower that scrapes the sky.The richer folk live towards the top of the tower at level 1 and many ghetto's can be found on the lower levels. Your previously mentioned clan of hunters live on level 4 and visit the guilds frequently to get jobs. The game consist of 16 chapters each containing 1 story mission and 2 side quest. Completing side quest will earn you money, items, and accessories for your guns. Yes I said guns. The games battle system is one I have never seen before. It deals with scratch damage and direct damage. Scratch damage is easier to build up into higher numbers but can't kill an enemy alone. Direct damage deals permanent damage and can kill the enemy but comes in low quantities, but it can turn scratch damage into direct damage. Machine guns are reliable for dishing out scratch damage and pistols and grenades are called for if you want to deal direct damage. Addiotionally you can perform "hero actions" which allow the selected character to sprint in a straight line while attacking enemies at the cost of one besel. Another function exist known as a tri attack which is basically all of the three characters performing a hero action at the same time in a triangular form. You can perform a tri attack at the cost of three resonace points. The battle system is hard to explain with words alone but is easy to learn.
The way you travel through the world is odd too. The game map consist of hexes that look like some kind of board game, and you can open the hexes so you can travel them using energy hexes. You obtain energy hexes by defeating enemies or finding them in chest. One of the biggest drawbacks with the game is it takes a long time for the story to even form, but its definitely worth the wait so you can learn of the characters back stories. The game has a good soundtrack with most of the battle themes being some form of rock and some suspenseful piano to give some of those cut scenes some real atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere the game has some good graphics, but the actually areas backgrounds get recycled a lot giving this game a lot less visual diversity than it deserves.
Resonance of Fate is a refreshing change to the JRPG formula and if you can withstand the repetition it's worth seeing it through to the end. I'd say this game is an 8/10. Review Written By:MokouWist
